What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Definition

The abbreviation SEO is short for “Search Engine Optimisation”. The process of SEO is about helping to optimise a website in order to get increased search engine visibility and therefore more search traffic from the non-paid part of the search results. This is often referred to as organic or natural search traffic. Being higher on the first page naturally leads to a higher Clickthrough Rate (CTR) then if you were at the bottom of page 1.

Algorithms

All search engines, i.e. Google, Bing and Yahoo! will rank websites on its search results pages according to its own set of factors, often called algorithms. These algorithms are factors that are scored against a particular website or web entity in terms of what the search engine’s deem to be relevant to the user or the search query. This means that videos, news posts, images, social media, maps as well as website listings could all feature.

Factors

There are a number of factors that determine a site’s position in the search engine results pages. We discuss some of the more common below:

On page factors: title tags, meta tags, heading tags, image naming (alt tags, and file names) and website content.

Usability & Site engagement: bounce rates, conversion rates, average time users spend on the site/page, site speed and page load.

Off page factors: external links, link quality, link relevancy. Google deems links to be like votes for your site. So you need good ones.

Content development: video marketing, long tail content development, blog management and  landing pages

Social Media Engagement: number of followers, url shares and engagement on posts on the main social channels.
